The remains of a large timber vessel were discovered off the coast of the Isle of Wight. Could this be the HMS Pomone, one of Nelson's frigates?

One of Nelson's finest frigates, HMS Pomone.
Revd. Christopher Gill

Ten years ago, a mystery wreck was discovered in Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight. Archaeologists think it might be the only surviving piece of one of Nelson's finest frigates HMS Pomone but have never been able to prove their theory. The Wreck Detectives team went to help them out.

The mystery of the Alum Bay wreck was solved. The tree ring dates, the style of the hawse holes, the presence of broad arrows and the dimensions on the timbers and frames strongly suggested it was the frigate Pomone. The final clincher came when a near unique structural feature was discovered, proving the wreck had to come from the HMS Pomone.
