The Science
Maximum traction and manoeuvrability were needed on the slippery slopes of the Tamworth Snowdome.
To get traction, both teams knew that they needed some grip on the snow. Too much would be a bad thing though, as the digging habit of the Turbo Taxi's narrow steel wheels proved.
The Cement Mixers got the traction right – their big belt provided a massive 'footprint' on the snow and made short work of the straights.
Shame they didn't have the manoeuvrability as well. The Mixers didn't get enough weight over the front ski, which meant it went where it wanted to, rather than digging into the snow and providing an accurate turn. The lack of effective brakes on their design was also a problem on the slippery snow.
