The Turbo Taxis building with expert Graham

The Turbo Taxis

The Turbo Taxis went for an all-out, rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered monster. Team and expert were in complete agreement that at this stage in the competition it should be all or nothing. They quickly scavenged a Range Rover, which they stripped of its beefy V8 and auto box. They reckoned the auto box would make for a more simple build with no need to change gear midway through their run.

A minor design change was necessary halfway through when they realised that their puny rear axle would not be up to the job, so they swapped it for a beefier transit model. They finished the day with a running engine and a race-ready machine.

Expert Ken invented a new system of screw fabrication which saved the team a ton of time and with a late burst of energy the team were even able to test their augur. It all boded well for a successful muck moving test day.

Woof Justice with expert Les before the race

Woof Justice

The team and expert Les decided on a front-wheel-drive approach, but their choice of a Rover saloon proved less than inspired when they realised that its complicated wiring loom was almost impossible to remove without cutting wires that would need to be reconnected if the engine was to run again.

The car did have some surprises though, as in stripping it they found £4.20 and a jar of pickled walnuts! Their machine was slow in taking shape but once the engine management system was mastered, they fabricated a ski from a an old truck siding (discarded last week by the Beach Bums!) and even had time to finish off their steering and seat.

Their last minute attempt to test their engine ended in disappointment though, as their the gremlins returned and the 2-litre unit wouldn't fire.
