The Powerlifters' half track

The Powerlifters

The Powerlifters and expert Richard Keale were in total agreement that tracks were the way forward. This flew in the face of common sense, as tracks have a very chequered history on Scrapheap!

The Powerlifters' drive train
They decided to build a unique half track truck, using an existing set of tracks from a mini digger at the rear and double tyres at the front. The tracks were driven by chains from the original truck hubs. Their blade was a hydraulically operated shovel.

The Powerlifters' half track is good to go

An uncharacteristically slow scavenge and numerous problems left them trailing in the morning. Their tracks were jammed and their truck was stuck on the 'heap.

After this slow start, the Powerlifters showed the grit that won them the title of Scrapheap champions in 2006. They pulled together and finished their truck in time to break out the tea and biscuits before the 10 hours was called!

Woof Justice on the start line

Woof Justice

The Geordie coppers decided on a double-ended wrecker with two tractors welded together and a hydraulically operated articulated pivot. So tracks versus tyres it was!

Woof Justice showed their scavenging mettle by netting two tractors and a cunning pivot from a digger whilst their Kent-based opponents were still wandering the 'heap. Judge John was impressed, backing them as his early favourites as their build bay bulged with scrappy booty.

Their early exuberance quickly faded as they were dogged by a series of technical issues. They were unable to free their pivot from its original mount and then lacked faith in the homemade hitch that was to take all the weight.

They sorted through their problems and by the end of the day they had just enough time to cut off the front wheels of the front tractor. They didn't however have the courage to take out the jack supporting the whole machine!
