The final challenge would have delighted Caesar himself. The Hairy Hogs and The Anoraks had to build racing chariots. But with no teams of horses to be seen, our challengers had to harness all the horsepower they could muster from the heap.

Both teams played to their strengths. The Hairy Hogs – having mastered Jet Boats and Landing Craft – were pleased to finally have a challenge on dry land. And their love of Harleys led these Irish engineers to doctor a two-wheeled iron horse for the challenge.

Being off-road enthusiasts, it was no surprise when The Anoraks opted for a four-wheeled 'horse'. Having won the Sand Racers, Power Rowers and Flame Flingers challenges, they decided to cut an old car down to size to pull their chariot – a solid and reliable, if heavy, solution. Both teams had proved themselves supreme scavengers and were worthy of their place in the final. But there could be only one winner in this 'Trash of the Titans'.

Lyndon from The Anoraks drew first blood, uncovering what looked like an old Trabant. And it was an automatic … perfect. Or was it? Both Captain Geoff and expert Rhino said the little car had too little power and would not allow it in the build area. Meanwhile, the Hogs scored an awesomely powerful bike and a car axle.

With no time to waste – and little choice – The Anoraks were forced to accept the shabbt Trabby, which turned out to be a classic old Dutch DAF Daffodil. If they could figure out how that trademark variomatic gearbox worked, they might just have a nifty runner.

The Hogs crafted a beautiful chariot of classical proportions whilst The Anoraks hacked their car into small pieces and then rebuilt the mini motor. The teams industriously overcame all manner of problems and turned out their impressive carts by nightfall. As they revved their engines in the darkness, it sounded like the Hogs were winning on grunt but all was set for a magnificent race.

Gee-gee force

The setting was a stock car track in Hertfordshire. The challenges comprised a test of speed around a figure-of-eight circuit followed by a complete lap of the track with targets to attack. With a trumpet fanfare, Emperor Robertus Maximus started the race.

The Hogs went first, getting round unscathed in one minute and 42 seconds, but their steering looked heavy. The Anoraks then completed their first run, struggling to keep in a straight line but beating the Hogs' time by eight seconds.

Game on! Trembling with trepidation, both teams went again on the assault and slalom course.

For this stage, they had to attack the targets with baseball bats. The Scrapheap team had a surprise in store for the teams: some targets were filled with flour.

The Hogs roared away confidently, striking everything in their path but that heavy steering continued to be a problem. Catching a kerb on the chicane, they burst a tyre and limped their way to the finish.

In the panic, they missed a crucial target – and a time bonus – leaving them with a final time of one minute, 27 seconds.

The Anoraks upped the ante with a perfect run, sending iron men packing, vases flying and watermelons tumbling as they went – but was it fast enough?

As the two teams lined up on the finish line, neither side looked confident of victory. Both machines had performed brilliantly and both teams were worthy but only one would get the thumbs up. In the final balance, it was The Anoraks who lifted the trophy.

The Hairy Hogs, desperately unlucky and supremely gracious in defeat, were the first to congratulate them.

A super build, super test and a super final.
