Never mind the rowlocks

Round 1

First to try to row themselves into the next round were The Anoraks. Their yellow conveyor contraption just about kept them afloat but despite the best efforts of their cox Lyndon, they immediately veered off course and had to abandon ship to make some quick adjustments.

Maximus cranked up their cement mixer for their first attempt, however there was a major problem with their oars – the feathering system did not work as planned and their boat only crept forward at a snail's pace. It was back to the shore for Maximus as well!

Round 2

The Anoraks thought they had solved their steering problem and raced off on the sound of the hooter. It was a first-rate start as they slowly built up speed – but then disaster struck.

In their excitement they over-revved the engine and their scrap-metal rowlocks couldn't cope with the force. First one oar and then the rest ripped loose and sank to the bottom of the lake. With no blades, The Anoraks had to be towed ashore so they could re-attach their oars – once our divers had found them.

Maximus had a great chance to edge ahead. Their oars had been adjusted and the mixer was still working fine. Unfortunately, the oar adjustments had worsened their oar stroke and they only managed to move less than a metre before they had to abandon their attempt.

Round 3

It was the final chance for the Anoraks and with their oars re-attached they had to take it slowly to prevent a repeat of the previous round. It wasn't the most graceful of starts and at first their conveyor was rocking all over the place, but as the team got used to the machine, they found their rhythm and sculled down the final straight to clock up a respectable time. Could Maximus put their first two disasters behind them and mount a challenge?

As the hooter blew, their mixer cranked into action and the oars actually began to propel them forwards! The race was on, but alas the pace was too slow and The Anoraks cruised into the next round as worthy winners.
