Thirsty for victory!
First up was a test of our team's aero agility. First to attempt the aeronautically themed obstacle course was Barfy, piloting The Fireblades' hybrid of trailer, car engine and plane propeller. It was a good start as he made light work of the first few obstacles in the slalom section but as his front wheel began to shimmy, he collided with the final obstacle. Cool as a cucumber, Barfy recovered and successfully negotiated the flight-departure gates manned by the Scrapheap air traffic controllers. Sadly for The Fireblades, it was all downhill after that as Barfy lost control completely, missing the loop-the-loop roundabout altogether and failing to complete the course. The result? The Fireblades were awarded the maximum time of three minutes.
The Thirsty Knights' captain, Pete, led from the front and despite appearing to lose control on a number of occasions, he managed to guide his fan-powered three wheeler through the obstacle course without incident. There was more erratic steering at the departure gates but just as it seemed all was lost, he skilfully regained control of his flying car. He gave the loop-the-loop roundabout a wide berth but made it round before dashing across the finishing line in a superb time of a minute and 48 seconds, only just failing to secure a 30-second time reduction when he narrowly missed landing on the RAF target at the end of the course.
Pacing themselves
The next round was an examination of pure pace – and with a car engine powering a plane propeller, The Fireblades seemed a dead cert on this one. Barfy didn't disappoint, tearing over the finishing line in just 20 seconds.
Despite such an impressive effort, The Fireblades had given away so much time on the obstacle course, The Fireblades were realistically hoping for their opponents to have a breakdown during the sprint. The Thirsty Knights were well aware of this fact and Pete took it relatively easily, coasting home in 27 seconds. This was much slower than Barfy but still quick enough to ensure a comprehensive overall victory for the Knights!
