Up 'n Atoms bowl over the competition
Each team was allowed three attempts on our mammoth bowling alley - the team that knocked down the most skittles in their three runs would progress to the next round.
First up were the REME Rebels and their nominated driver, Claire, who looked nervous as she headed down to the motorised section of the course. The weedy moped around which their bowling banger was built struggled with the weight of their giant hoops and failed to reach the skittles. The Up 'n Atoms had a poor first run, too. Driver Jimmy slammed on the anchors but failed to send his micro car and roll-cage into a spin.
On her second run, REME Rebel Claire looked far more confident as she hurtled towards the free-wheel line but then disaster struck: she failed to disengage her moped's engine and crashed into the skittles under motorised power. It was spectacular to watch, but it counted for nothing. Jimmy's team watched intently as he put his foot to the floor and screeched towards the free-wheel line. Once there, Jimmy stamped on the brakes and for a second it looked as though the Up 'n Atoms' hefty, hooped leviathan was going to pitch into the forward roll required. Sadly for the boys, their giant hamster wheel didn't have quite enough momentum and rocked back, leaving Jimmy suspended in mid air!
It was all or nothing for the REME Rebels on their final attempt. Claire picked up some impressive speed and managed to get her moped off the tarmac, but failed to send her bowling banger into a spin and pulled up just short of the pins. So it was a simple equation for Jimmy and the Up 'n Atoms - hit just one skittle and they would win. Daredevil Jimmy did better, sending his rolling runaway into a full 360 and into the towering targets. It was a truly classic Scrapheap moment.
