Result

Maximus victorious

After much tinkering with a very unhappy Jaguar engine, Irn Cru were first up to the water's edge. There was a slight delay as the horn blew, then the Irn Cru's bomb trolley began to hurtle alarmingly to the edge of the water.

Halfway down the 50-metre run, the bomb began to wobble, falling forward off the trolley before it should have. Luckily, momentum took it in the right direction and it did bounce in the water twice. Unfortunately, the 'controlled crash' left their trolley bent and broken and they retired to try and weld up the damage.

Maximus armed the spring for round one while everybody retreated to a very safe distance. Their mechanical release pootled along its tracks until it pushed the spring past the point of no return. The machine fired the discus high into the air, bouncing once and hitting some bushes before bouncing and coming to a rest in the water, giving them six points.

All by themselves

While Irn Cru worked on their damaged machine, Maximus carried on with the next rounds of the challenge. Propping their machine up slightly and putting the discus a little further up the arm, they managed to get it to go in a straight line, bouncing three times on the water before coming to skidding halt just shy of the dam.

In round three, with the machine higher yet again, they sent a fast-moving discus onto the water, bouncing once before hitting the dam. It failed to actually dislodge any barrels, however, leaving them with just three points.

By round four, Maximus were still going it alone. After a marshal accidentally fired their machine, knocking two barrels off the dam and flying into the water (the shot was disallowed!), they took their (official) round four go but it went off in the wrong direction, giving them two bounces and a grand total of 24 points.

Playing catch up

Irn Cru finally mended their trolley and were ready for their round two go. This time, the bomb did not release cleanly. It did bounce twice, however, giving them another six points.

The team lined up their (by now sorry looking) trolley for the third round. It flew towards the water, hit their pivot and somersaulted in the at the same moment as the Jaguar's back axle snapped under it, spelling the end of Irn Cru's valiant and spectacular challenge, leaving Maximus victorious with a score of 24 vs Irn Cru's 21.
