| The Challenge
In the first of the new series, Scrapheap takes to the dusty dunes of a Guildford sand quarry as a team of hot-blooded Lancashire fire fighters take on some nerdy off-road enthusiasts in a battle to build sand-racers that can climb precipitous inclines and dig their way out of the deepest dusty trench. The Anoraks
Geoff Turtell, Lyndon Camidge and Marc Draper make up The Anoraks. Named after their club of the same name, these three enthusiasts from Surrey can't get enough of off-roading. Geoff and Lyndon work in the technology industry and Marc is a four-wheel-drive mechanic. They spend their spare time in Marc's garage, building and restoring Land Rovers and other 4x4 vehicles. Lyndon claims he has broken, crashed and sunk more Land Rovers than he's had hot dinners, Geoff claims to be very good at hitting things with a hammer and Marc likes to think he is the stabilising influence of the team. Lots of experience, slightly batty and a bit posh, these boys are determined to go all the way! The Anoraks' expert is Paul Foley. After a seven-year stint in Africa with his off-road company, Paul recently returned to the family fabrication business, Foley Specialist Vehicles. Paul has been building and adapting specialised one-off vehicles since leaving school. An expert in elaborate Land Rover project vehicles, he's been part of a team that has built six-wheeled rovers for Saudi Sheiks and converted Hummers for oil exploration. He builds tough, uncompromising six-wheel-drive safari vehicles that have survived rhino charges. He's also armoured Land Rovers that weigh four tonnes. It sounds like The Anoraks are in safe hands ... |

The Hoselliers
Dave Seal (Spanner), Mark McCracken (Crack) and Karl Blackledge (Sifter) are three firemen from Blackburn. They work together as part-time sheet metal workers and spend a lot of time building things from scratch in the station workshop. They're also into model helicopters and Motorcross. These boys are up for whatever we throw at them. They've already seen UFOs and built bridges in the Peruvian jungle, so Scrapheap Challenge should be a walk in the park for these lads! Dave says he is Captain because he has all the ideas and can do all the pointing. The other two say they listen to him and then go with their ideas. There's plenty of banter and laughs from these Lancashire boys – but can they talk themselves into the final? The Hoselliers' expert is Duncan Speirs, a very tall self-employed garage owner and mechanic with a huge ginger beard. Hailing from Kilmarnock in Scotland, Duncan has more than 30 years' experience in the motor trade and has been building and racing cars for years. After a long stint working in BMW dealerships, he went out on his own and now specialises in building one-off vehicles and racers. He has built numerous beach buggies and off-road rails from Beetle-based specials to V8-engined desert duellers. |

The judge
Our first Scrapheap judge this year is Chris Scott, who established himself as Britain's foremost expert on travel in the Sahara with his book Sahara Overland. Since 1982, he has undertaken more than 20 expeditions through the Sahara, visiting every country except Chad, as well as the desert regions of southern Africa, Australia and North America by motorcycle, four-wheel drive or bush taxi. Chris has contributed to the UK's major four-wheel-drive, motorcycling and travel publications and to date has authored five books on desert expeditions as well as the aforementioned 'desert bible', Sahara Overland. He's recently back from driving across Morocco in a Mercedes saloon car. Why? Because he wanted to prove it could be done ... If all goes to plan Chris and his trusty Merc will be crossing the Sahara in 2005. |
