Smooth Rider

This week's challenge involves suspensions of disbelief! The teams have to build balancing rigs to carry vats brimming with liquid around our unfeasibly uneven course, spilling as little as they can.

The Young Ones

Tom Willson, Jon Scott and Richard Jordan are the youngest team ever to appear on Scrapheap Challenge. Tom, the captain, used to work as a fabrication engineer for a container company; he currently works for a haulage company. Richard is set to study electrical engineering at Imperial College. Jon is studying cybernetics at Reading University. The three got to know each other through a shared passion for shooting each other with paintballs.

For this challenge the Young Ones' technical consultant is Alan Brunning. Alan is a suspension systems specialist at Ford Cars, so he knows a thing or two about the technical problems that this challenge poses.

The Young Ones have already proved that they're no novices when it comes to bodging. So can youth triumph once again?

The Barley Pickers

The Barley Pickers are a team of Devonshire farmers. Andy Barnes, the captain, is a dairy, arable and beef farmer. Keeping the wheels turning on the farm is one of his responsibilities. Robin Bright is self-employed and says he's regularly told: 'It's a good job you work for yourself – nobody else is going to give you a job.' Keith Sparks's day always starts with checking and feeding livestock (which includes 31,000 cockerels and 100 beef cattle), but like most farmers he can and does turn his hand to more or less anything.

This time out the Barley Pickers' technical consultant is Bob Thompson, a research engineer at Qinetiq, who specialises in hybrid electric vehicles. Suspension systems are a crucial part of Bob's work.

The truly agricultural skills of the Barleys served them well in the Mud Monster challenge. But can they clear a swath into the semi-final?

The expert

The bodgers' boffin this week is John Hetherington, professor of engineering design at Cranfield University and head of the Engineering Systems Department at the Royal Military College of Science. John's many responsibilities include an MSc course in military vehicle technology, in which he teaches terra-mechanics (the study of soil/vehicle interaction).
