This week our teams will have to defy gravity – they've got to build a machine that can float on air. But we're not talking airy-fairy. We want hulking great hovercraft that can race at speed over a testing course of land and water.

Krazy Karters
These budding bodgers all work at the UK's largest go-karting track, The Raceway. Mark Kemps and Craig Nicholson are two Kiwis who have been exploring Europe – in a jacuzzi-equipped double-decker bus with all mod-cons. The third member of the team is friend and colleague John Cowan.
The team's technical consultant is John Gifford, MD and founder of Griffon Hovercraft, which produces the largest range of hovercraft available in the world today.
So can the Karters cart off the trophy? Or will they be taking an early jacuzzi?

Martial Mechanics
This is a team of martial arts fanatics. Jemma McConville, the captain, is a black belt in judo and tae kwon do. David 'Big Dave' Norbury is Jemma's boss at work, which involves vehicle engineering and recovery. These days Dave is mostly an armchair expert in martial arts. Jason Woodall first got interested in mechanics through maintaining his motorcycle. He currently works as a plasterer and painter.
Technical consultant Bill Baker runs a hovercraft manufacturing company in Banbury. Bill has built and raced hovercraft for more than 30 years, and craft he designed currently hold the Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 world championships.
But can he help the Martial Mechanics hover to victory? Or are they all heading for a deflating experience?

The expert
Anne Scrimshaw has been racing hovercraft all her life. She has a degree in automotive engineering and is on the council of the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain.
