This week the teams have to dig deep – the challenge is to build a machine that can dig up as much sand as possible in a given time.

Hammerlocks

For the semi-final the wrestlers Mike 'Majik' Connell and Stephen 'Psycho Steve' Edwards are joined by Peter 'Conscience' Murphy. Conscience, a biomedical engineer, was in the original line-up for the Hammerlocks but had to drop out because of injury. By day Majik, the captain, is an IT officer; in the ring he's the UK's Junior Heavyweight Champion. Psycho, an engineer, shares Majik's passion for motorcycles and 'fixing things' as well as wrestling.

In this round the Hammerlocks' technical consultant is Peter 'Volvo' Hillman, a product specialist at Volvo Construction, where he is called in to troubleshoot the problems that no one else can fix. Peter has worked with construction equipment for 20 years.

So can the wrestlers get to grips with the Barley Pickers? Or will they finally be forced to submit?

Barley Pickers

The Barley Pickers are a team of Devonshire farmers. Andy Barnes, the captain, is a dairy, arable and beef farmer. Keeping the wheels turning on the farm is one of his responsibilities. Robin Bright is self-employed and says he's regularly told: 'It's a good job you work for yourself – nobody else is going to give you a job.' Keith Sparks's day always starts with checking and feeding livestock (which includes 31,000 cockerels and 100 beef cattle), but like most farmers he can and does turn his hand to more or less anything.

This time out the Barley Pickers' technical consultant is Ian Lewis, owner of Lewis Equipment, a company with a range of British-designed and British-built diggers for all applications.

The truly agricultural bodging skills of the Barleys have cleared a swath into the semi-finals. But can they bury the Hammerlocks?
