This week the Barley Pickers dug themselves into the Scrapheap Challenge final. Their JCB-style digger showed that it is possible to get hydraulics right defying years of Scrapheap lore.
Before the test began, the Hammerlocks' drag-line digger looked a real contender, but the team never really got to grips with operating it. The first round was ideally suited to the massive lifting capacity of their digger, but every time they filled the bucket it overbalanced and emptied. Round two suited the precision and manoeuvrability of the Barley Pickers' digger and sure enough the Barleys won easily.
The Hammerlocks could have levelled it in the final round, which was worth double points. Their hopes brightened when the Barley Pickers reported that their chassis was severely damaged they estimated it had lost 80% of its strength. However, the Barley Pickers nursed their vehicle across the ditch and into the final. The Hammerlocks had given their all, but it wasn't enough.
