Clockwork Cars

This week's challenge is to build human-powered vehicles. The tricky part is that the team may only put in energy when the vehicle is stationary. This means that the energy must get stored in some kind of 'accumulator', such as a spring or a flywheel.

The Jailbreakers

Mick Johnson, Andrew Scott and Steve Parton are all prison officers from HMP Featherstone. Captain Mick and Andy are physical education instructors; Steve is a civilian instructional officer.

The Jailbreakers' technical consultant is Nick Green, a consultant engineer working on transmission systems for high-spec road vehicles. Like his opposing TC, Nick is also a member of the British Human Powered Club.

The Jailbreakers could spring a surprise or two – and they're probably used to the odd wind-up.

The Young Ones

Tom Willson, Jon Scott and Richard Jordan are the youngest team ever to appear on Scrapheap Challenge. Tom, the captain, used to work as a fabrication engineer for a container company; he currently works for a haulage company. Richard is set to study electrical engineering at Imperial College. Jon is studying cybernetics at Reading University. The three got to know each other through a shared passion for shooting each other with paintballs.

The Young Ones' technical consultant is Clive Sleath, an engineer at a company that makes equipment for pharmaceutical manufacturers. In his own time, Clive's passion is human-powered vehicles.

Clearly these boys have youth on their side. But have they still got a lot to learn?
