Scrapheap Challenge returns for a fourth series in search of the true geniuses of the junkyard.

Every week, two teams construct a machine for a specific task using only the junk they can scavenge from the scrapheap. And they have just 10 hours to build their contraption before it is put to the test. Whichever creation performs the best advances its team one step nearer the ultimate prize - the Scrapheap Challenge Trophy.

The series is again presented by comedy actor and novelist Robert Llewellyn (also known as Red Dwarf's Kryten) and scientist, documentary film-maker, keyboard player and Renaissance woman Cathy Rogers.

This year's competitors include three ballroom dancing fanatics from Essex, a team of scientists from the British Antarctic research station and a hyper-competitive team of mill-wrights from the USA. The Megalomaniacs, last year's winners, will be returning for the grand final against this year's winners.

The series ends with a one-off special called Mega Wars, the ultimate scrapheap scrap, with three teams and a two-day build.

Scrapheap Challenge is exciting, dirty and dangerous. It also has a sneaky way of painlessly imparting lots of interesting science and engineering knowledge to its viewers. If that's your thing, check out each challenge on this website - you'll find a 'Science' section that explains exactly what is happening beneath all that metal, noise and dust.
