Chat Ed : Hello and welcome to tonight's live SALVAGE SQUAD chat with CLAIRE BARRATT and LEE HURST.
Claire Barratt : Hello.
Chat Ed : Welcome to tonight's live SALVAGE SQUAD chat with JERRY and AXEL!
Jerry : Hello chaps, how are you all doing?
Axel : Hi there.
James B : Hi!
kevin666 : hi
Adrian Weatherhead : Hi guys!!
dilligaf : As the moth had dual controls, did Cobby let any of the team 'have a go'?
Jerry : Are you kidding!!!!!!!
Axel : We can go back in the summer and have a play.
Jerry : I fear it's going to be highly addictive.
Adrian20001 : Is jerry always moody?
Axel laughs
Axel : Only when he doesn't get his Weetabix in the morning.
Jerry : I care! I care passionately about my work and it comes out now and again in my artistic temperament.
tower : how come some of the people you help are so rude sometimes when you are really doing them a favour
Jerry : Pressure of work. Like me, they're passionate and care too.
kickstart : i am a 19 year old mechanic and have recently started my first restoration project, a 1971 truimph herald convertible! what was your first resoration projects?
Jerry : 1956 Francis Barnett Plover motorcycle. I was 14.
Axel : My Kawasaki ZXR 750 H2 re-build which lived in the bedroom until my girlfriend gave it its marching orders.
bobman : why didnt lee go up in the plane the chicken!?
Jerry : Sheer cowardice.
Axel : No bottle.
Geoff : cluck cluck
Axel laughs
George Wood : Team, what's it REALLY like to have worked on some of the best examples of our nations industrial heritage?
Axel : A privilege.
Jerry : Unbelievable. You can actually only dream of doing this type of thing. I hope we get to do lots more. A lot of thanks to everyone involved.
scotty : does time or cost ever compromise the restorations
Jerry : You can't compromise restoration. We'd rather miss the event we are aiming for than compromise the job.
Andy from Bristol : why can't there be more women restorers like Claire?
Jerry : There should be. Come on girls get your act together!
Axel : Girl power!
Jerry : Yeah, steam power!
Chat Ed: We did a chat with Claire and Lee a couple of weeks ago - you can read the transcript in the past chats area of channel4.com/talk
Chris : I want to restore a Jaguar XJS. I have a good understanding of cars, general maintenance work, but not an expert like yourselves. I am prepared to work and learn, do you think I wouls be taking on to much by myself to restore a car of my dreams??
Jerry : Anything is possible, given sufficient time, effort, enthusiasm and money! Use your owners club to get advice. Good luck.
davidtetley : Hello, On the gipsy moth the main spar and the control box looked new, were they?
Axel : Yes they were new.
Jerry : Built to perfect replica pattern though.
Gary Turner : Are you looking for any more members to join the team
Jerry : We are a compact unit, no plans at present, we'll keep you posted though.
Tim : what was the most rewarding project of the series ?
Jerry : Ooh gosh. They were all wonderful in their own way.
Axel : The Steam Roller for the reaction of the owner.
Jerry : Yeah that made it so worth it so see Colin's reaction.
tommy : Who really scratched the paint on the Bristol you restored?
Axel laughs
Jerry : We're sorry, all correspondence on that subject is now closed! (We still don't know!)
cyberben : As a guide, what percentage of new parts would you guys be happy to use before feeling that it was no longer a restoration and more of a replica with a few original parts?
Axel : All depends on the condition of the parts received.
Jerry : This is something that's spoken about in every owners club magazine. Personally I'm not above seeing a recreation providing it's labelled as such. The vintage sports club has a rule which is 5 major components e.g. engine, gear box etc. That gives some idea.
peter age 9 : /peter age 9 what type of thing do you like restoring best of all?
Axel : Big mucky things. The dirtier the better!
Jerry : Right now, my new house.
stephanos : were you always taking things apart to see how they worked when you were kids?
Axel : Yes I did. And never put them back together again.
Jerry laughs
Jerry : yeah same here.
DavidH : How many experts were involved with the project, apart from the CAA and the owner?
Jerry : Dick and Dave. That was it.
Proogs : Which is best... lego or meccano?! :-)
Axel laughs
Axel : Lego!
Jerry : Meccano!
Russell Macfarlane : what was it like flying in the moth guys?
Axel : Brilliant.
Jerry : Too special to describe. Buy one and find out!
Chrismyazz : where is the moth stored now???..museum????or personal collection?
Jerry : Personal collection. There is talk of it going to a museum in Australia.
Eire : What do you reckon the moth's value is now?
Jerry : They're so rare it's whatever someone is prepared to pay.
Jurgen : would u have gone up in the gyro if it had been a twin seater?
Jerry : Definitely.
Axel : Yeah, sure. I did go up in a twin seater but it belonged to someone else.
Jerry : Lee chickened out of that one as well.
Ruzeen Farsad : (please answer!) axel why were u worrying when u were going over the trees in the moth?
Axel : Because there's an illusion that you're going very slowly and the best time to come down is not over a load of trees.
Villan : What about restoring some of lee's jokes?
Axel laughs
Jerry : They're beyond repair!
James C : I have to go now but thanks for one of best series on TV, will you do more?
Jerry : Here's hoping! We're ready. All we need is C4 so bombard them with letters.
Axel : We've got lots of projects that we're looking into.
Mick from Brum : How long did the team actually spend restoring the Gypsy Moth?
Axel : 6 months on and off.
James B : What is the one thing you would most like to restore (please answer this!)
Jerry : I want to finish my Lallard J2X.
Axel : I want to restore one of them banana split cars. They're 6 wheeled trucks (argocat).
PaddockReject : Do the restorations take place concurrently?
Jerry : We filmed them over the course of last year, 10 projects in total.
Mark Hills : Which of the projects caused you grief, and why?
Jerry : They all did in some way.
Axel : The race car did. Lola...she was no showgirl!
Jerry : Kept turning up trouble.
Chat Ed : Our half hour with JERRY and AXEL is almost up now, so last three questions now...
nigel goode : Did you know about the history of the projects before starting ?
Jerry : It emerged as we restored.
vaigen : Have there ever been any projects you have turned down because they were too delapidated?
Jerry : Yes, many.
Axel : Lots of thought goes into the ones we choose.
Jerry : They're hard work but we at least have to have a sporting chance of doing it.
roy : i have to go now butbut i just want to know if there are any tips for a 14 year old with a passion for cars and a project underway
Axel : Patience!
Jerry : Patience! If it's not going right, go away and come back later. Never be afraid to ask for help, guys!
Chat Ed : That's it! Thanks for coming and talking to us JERRY and AXEL! There are two other Salvage Squad chat transcripts. You can find them in the past chats area of channel4.com/talk. You can find out more about Salvage Squad at the Salvage Squad website - channel4.com/science.
