Thom Hendy has worked with vehicles for as long as he can remember. Living on a farm, he does all his own mechanics fixing tractors and Land Rovers, and even building machines for particular tasks on the farm.
'As cars have got more modern, I have liked them less and less,' says Thom. As a result, he has grown more interested in classic cars. 'I enjoy working on a vehicle that responds to love something simple with good, solid, basic engineering that you can really get stuck into. I love resurrecting classic cars and giving them a whole new lease of life.'
Thom recently restored a 1954 Alvis. He took it on a rally from London to Peking and came second in his class by a four-second margin. On the rally, he also acted as the navigator, co-driver and mechanic, so he is more than happy to put his engineering abilities to the test.
As Thom is a man who relishes an unusual challenge, he was a natural choice to take on the task of restoring the Snow Trac. He was surprised when he saw it for the first time, but hugely enjoyed getting to grips with the engineering problems that it presented.
He says: 'It's a strange vehicle but once I started, it wasn't all that different from a Land Rover and I've restored loads of those over the years so I just got stuck in.'
Thom enjoyed working on the Snow Trac so much that he has now bought one of his own, which he is adapting to use on his farm.
