Steve Cobb lives and breathes military vehicle restoration. He has worked on everything from a Staghound armoured car to Matilda & Valentine tanks.
Steve started out as an engineer on commercial aircraft, like Hercules and Viscounts. Then he got involved in the restoration of a Douglas A26 Invader a plane that was the ultimate development of World War II piston engine technology.
After that, he became interested in military vehicle restoration. Steve loves working on military vehicles and feels that it gives him a real insight into the lives of the soldiers that used them. He says: 'I have great respect for the soldiers when I see the equipment they had to use and the conditions they had to put up with.'
His ultimate dream would be to work on the restoration of a German World War II Panther tank. He knows where there is one he just needs to find the time and money to take on such a massive project.
Steve does all the restoration work himself, including all the machining of new parts. He can spend several years working on the biggest projects.
The M10 was a serious challenge because the timescale was really tight. Claire and Steve ended up squeezing a whole year's work into four months!
When Steve finally got to drive the M10, he felt that all the hard work had been worthwhile. He sees the completed vehicle as a tribute to the men who fought for our freedom 60 years ago.
