Where do they come from?
Some atoms are radioactive. This means that the nucleus of the atom is unstable and it will eventually change to become a more stable nucleus. When it changes, it can throw out an alpha particle or a beta particle. This nuclear reaction also releases energy which is released as gamma radiation.
What happens to this radiation?
It usually isn't absorbed - it gets through most materials but is reduced by thick lead.
If gamma radiation passes through materials such as electronic circuits and human cells it can damage them.
