ENERGY & POWER

Power sources available to the Robot Constructor are petrol, rechargeable electricity from batteries or using the heat from nuclear fission to generate electricity.

question iconBut what is power?
Power is the rate of transfer of energy and it's unit is the watt.
'Power' is a bit like the speed at which energy travels. The greater the power, the faster energy is transferred.
For example, you can hardly hear the 0.05 watt speakers in a personal stereo, unless you're wearing them, but a 100 W loudspeaker is 2000 times more powerful. It makes a much bigger sound - because it transfers 2000 times more energy in the same time. headphonesloud speakers

We have to measure energy in joules and time in seconds to get the power in watts.

question iconA climbing robot needs to do 5000 J of work to get to the top of a ramp. What is its engine power if it does this in 10 seconds?
