CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIALS

question iconWhy is it important to choose the correct material for your robot design?
If you make the wrong choice your robot could sustain fatal damage or run out of power before it should. If you make the right choice, your robot will survive intact.
You have a choice of three common materials - plastic, steel or lead. Each has its own specific characteristics and good and bad points. Plastic for example is very light and so a plastic robot will be more energy efficient than say, a lead robot which will be very heavy. But then, lead will shield against sources of radiation which will cause damage to the electronic circuitry of your robot. There are lots of things to consider. So you'll need to give it some serious thought.

Humans, of course, have no choice in deciding what materials they're made of. Fortunately, through the process of evolution, the materials which make up our bodies - bone, skin, cartilage and tendons, have been refined to the point where they are more or less perfect for the job they have to do.
