The giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands probably only reach sexual maturity at the age of about 40. Males have a concave groove in the base of their shell and mount the females from behind, bringing their tail, which houses the penis, into contact with the female’s genital region. Mating may last for several hours and the males often roar hoarsely as they ‘get into the groove’. |
