It takes the fruit fly Drosophila bifurca three weeks to make just one sperm. The adult male is 3mm (0.1in) long and the sperm is a rather disproportionate 58mm (2.3in). Drosophila melanogasters sperm on the other hand is 1.9mm (0.07in) long, and this fruit fly can begin copulating only a few hours after he tumbles out of his pupa.
