First shown on 25 September 2001

Disasters don't just happen. They are the result of events locked together in time. The science behind what went wrong in a number of disasters is the subject of this website.

Ayrton Senna
The death of Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver.

Mount St Helens
The eruption of Mount St Helens in Washington state, which killed 57 people and devastated hundreds of square miles.

Airshow
The airshow miracle, when two MiG jets hit each other while flying in formation and no one was killed.

HMS Coventry
The sinking of HMS Coventry during the Falklands war, which killed 17 men.

Bhopal
The Bhopal gas disaster, when a toxic cloud killed and injured thousands of Indians.

TWA 800
The crash of TWA 800, when 230 died and theories of the cause proliferated.
Events are examined in terms of the crucial scientific elements that, combined or in sequence, led inexorably to a particular disaster. In some cases, alternative theories have been thrown up and these are discussed in detail. And in most cases, the disasters come with 'silver linings' - changes that have been made in the light of what happened and so have made life safer for those involved in the future.
