As British sailor Donald Crowhurst prepared to compete in the Golden Globe yacht race in 1968, he had dreams of fame and fortune. But his nerves were already jangling by the time he set off. He was tearful on departure and once he realised that his boat wasn't up to the journey, he simply couldn't face the failure. And so he took the only other way out – he cheated.
If only Crowhurst had taken this, it would have lightened his stress load and he just might have survived ...
Cape Horn is renowned for having some of the worst weather on the planet. Here, the circumpolar currents of the Southern Ocean, normally spread out over thousands of kilometres, are suddenly squeezed through a narrow bottleneck of just 1000 kilometres between Antarctica and the southern tip of South America.
