In 1998, Tony Bullimore's ship the Exide Challenger capsized more than 2000 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia. He was competing in the Vendée Globe, a notorious single-handed, non-stop round-the-world yacht race. Only half of the competitors are ever expected to make it across the 41,600-kilometre course, through perilous waters, to the finish line.
If you capsize in cold water, first try to get out of the water. For example, by climbing onto the overturned boat. This will reduce your heat loss massively and delay the onset of hypothermia.
