There is no scientific consensus on whether a positive mental attitude increases chances of survival.

A survival suit

Don't leave home without ...
... a survival suit

Although Tony was chipper about his survival prospects, he was much closer to death than he would like to admit. Had he not been wearing his survival suit, then it's almost certain that he would have perished, probably within hours of the capsize.

Survival suits cover the entire body, including the head from which a lot of heat can be lost. Because he was wearing one of these suits, Bullimore was able to remain buoyant, dry and reduce his heat loss. With the food supplies he had, and the ability to pump clean desalinated water, Bullimore believed he could probably have survived for a couple of weeks. But it's been estimated that he only had enough air in the cabin for a day or so more before he would have suffocated or been forced to leave the relative safety of the upturned boat and brave the harsh open waters of the Southern Ocean.
