In 1987, billionaire Richard Branson and former Swedish Air Force pilot Per Lindstrand attempted to make aviation history by becoming the first people to fly a hot air balloon across the Atlantic Ocean. Five people had already died attempting the 4800-kilometre journey. To stand a chance, the pair knew they had to rise higher than the rest, and enter the jet stream.
