Question 33
Is it possible to see the effects of natural selection and or evolutionary change within a lifetime?

Prof Campbell: Yes. There are many examples. Insects can evolve very quickly. We select bacteria in the lab every day with particular selective advantages. Viruses also evolve quickly. Take the flu virus and HIV for example.

Question 34
Organisms are known to evolve into niches. Is it possible for other species to evolve human-level intelligence if homo sapiens went extinct?

Prof Campbell: This is possible, but very unlikely unless humans lost complete control of the environment. But who knows what will happen in a million years time, even when the oil runs out?

Question 35
Is there an evolutionary explanation for why we cry when we feel sad?

Prof Campbell: Yes. These both have a clear selective advantage. They generate sympathy from other around us, who will then lend support. It also makes us think. These would help us overcome an intellectual crisis and carry on a relationship to pass on our genes..
