As the world's governments came to realise the extent of the global warming problem, they realised something had to be done to stop or slow it. The most famous of these measures — not least because of the United States' withdrawal from the agreement — is the Kyoto Protocol.

The Kyoto targets aren't the only ones being set, however. Among other initiatives, the EU Landfill Directive aims to cut methane emissions by reducing the amount of biodegradable waste in European landfill sites.

Kyoto and the Landfill Directive aren't just distant government targets, however — they will affect each and every one of us. In the battle against global warming, we are all going to be called on to play our part.
