Tips for being green in the living room

Quick tips

Don't leave TVs and hi-fis on stand-by
Leaving things on stand-by uses large amounts of energy unnecessarily. Switch things off.

Replace ordinary light bulbs with energy efficient ones
They might cost more initially, but they last much longer and are significantly better for the environment.

Turn the lights off when you leave a room
This is one of the easiest things anyone can do — and the difference it can make to the amount of energy we consume is considerable.

More tips

Buy green electricity
Help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by buying electricity from suppliers that support renewable energy sources. See find out more to find a new supplier — the Centre for Alternative Technology is a good place to start.

Fit dampers to fireplaces
This helps to conserve heat and reduce energy loss.

Insulate your home properly
Insulation stops heat, and therefore energy, escaping from your home. Proper insulation means you won't have to use your heating as much. Sealing off drafts and unnecessary air vents will also help to keep warm air in and cold air out.

Reuse or recycle old magazines and newspapers
Recycle all of your old newspapers and magazines by either arranging a collection or taking them to a recycling point. Old magazines can also be reused by taking them to your local doctor or dentist's surgery for the waiting rooms before recycling.

Don't renew magazine subscriptions if you don't read them
If you subscribed to a magazine that you hardly ever read, don't resubscribe thinking that you'll make more of an effort this year.

Send e-cards
Instead of the traditional paper, why not send e-cards?

Stop getting junk mail
The Mailing Preference Service (www.mpsonline.org.uk) can help.
