Panama: Part One

The route through a series of pitch-black caves is tortuous

The route through a series of pitch-black caves is tortuous. Bear and crew wade through boulder-strewn channels towards the sound of running water. The caves are home to colonies of bats which are Bear’s worst nightmare. More serious is the possibility of flash flooding. In torrential downpours, water levels can rise from 15 centimetres to 6 metres in 30 minutes, producing a killer torrent that could drown even the fittest of swimmers.
