Anatomy
for Beginners features public anatomy demonstrations carried
out by the famous anatomist/artist Dr Gunther von Hagens. He has been
at the Institute of Anatomy at Heidelberg University in Germany since
1976. In 1977 he invented plastination – a groundbreaking technology
for preserving anatomical specimens with reactive polymers or plastics.
This is the special technique that he uses to reveal the wonderful
complexity of the human body beneath the skin in his famous Body
Worlds exhibitions. Dr von Hagens’
public demonstrations are not however formal anatomy dissections
of the sort that, until the recent past, were performed by all medical
students as part of their medical training. In a formal dissection,
anatomical systems and parts of the body are dissected slowly and
with meticulous care to reveal the intricate details of the body’s
makeup. This process takes dozens of hours of dissection, aided
by extensive reading and discussion. Anatomy for Beginners
gives a just glimpse of the amazing complexity of our inner world
– so close, yet usually so hidden from view.
