The work carried out by Galen and Vaselius led to an understanding of what the body looked like under the skin: they were able to detail bone and muscle structures, and they also discovered tubes and valves to which they lent their names. But these early anatomists – whose interests were more philosophical, religious and artistic – had not actually discovered how the body worked.
