Interview with Matthew Couillard

Matthew Couillard

Matthew was lost on a cold mountain for nine days when he was only 10 years old.

Age: 22

Occupation: Restaurant manager. Drummer in In Death We Rise, a metal band.

How long did it take you to recover from the physical and mental trauma of your ordeal?

Physical – it took about a year or two to be fully healed. Mental - about the same. There were times when I didn't feel safe alone and nightmares occurred often.

Has the experience changed you?

Yes, it gives me a much stronger respect for life.

How often do you think about it?

Monthly. It usually happens when someone introduces me to someone new. Then I can't help telling the story.

Has it had an affect on your relationship to your father?

Of course, who wouldn't be closer after sharing an experience like that together?

What was your worst moment on the mountain?

Waking up alone, in the dark, after having a vivid dream of my father's demise. I can still remember that dream.

And best?

Being found. Duh, right? Seeing people and food after that long made me lose it. The only time I've ever cried due to happiness.

Is there anything you'd have done differently?

Umm... not gotten lost.

Has the experience put you off skiing?

Maybe. I've been skiing and boarding several time since, but I have lost interest for some reason.

What advice would you offer to anyone who wishes to ski in the wilds?

Warm and waterproof clothes, food, and supplies to start a fire are always ideal. And don't ever give up if put in an unforgiving situation.
