  • Staying hydrated helps to fight off frostbite and hypothermia because it enables the body to generate heat more efficiently. Drink at least three litres a day and avoid diuretics such as tea and coffee.


  • The best chances of survival when suffering from any form of altitude sickness is to descend. If all else fails, just get down.


  • Additional clothing won't help hyperthermia. The only way to survive is to receive extra body warmth, such as by sharing a sleeping bag with someone who is not suffering from hypothermia.


  • Frostbite can be delayed by avoiding tight-fitting clothing or boots, refraining from smoking and drinking alcohol.
