Alone in the Ocean

Two best friends set off in sea-going kayaks to tour Washington State's San Juan Islands. Saul is an experienced sea kayaker, but Larry does not admit that he's a complete novice. Having originally met on the athletics track in school, the friendly competition that brought them together now leads them into disaster.

Scene from the programme Alone in the Ocean

They set off across a calm sea just as they are losing the light, but in the dark they fall victim to stormy conditions and surging currents. After washing up on an inhospitable island, they decide to cut the trip short and make for home across the notoriously dangerous Rosario Strait.

The novice makes no headway at all, and is soon sucked out into the Pacific. How do the two survive to tell the tale?

Read what Saul has to say about his experience.
