Stranded in the Snow

Stranded in the Snow
    Next

On the 29 December 1992, Jennifer and Jim Stolpa and their baby son Clayton set off on a 1000-mile trip from their home in California to a family funeral in Idaho. The couple were determined to be there and they left despite bad weather warnings. They were young and confidant and were not going to be beaten by a bit of snow.

As they headed north-east out of the San Francisco bay area, their main route on the interstate highway was cut off by blizzards. Undeterred, Jim and Jennifer planned another route using minor roads. They had snow chains fitted to their truck and so headed off with no qualms. However, they didn't have a mobile phone and couldn't find a working pay phone to call relatives and let them know what they were doing.
