Inevitably, it becomes difficult to breathe underneath the little boat and Meg and John begin gasping for breath and panicking. They decide to flip the dingy and try sitting in it. They lift Meg into the dingy and are appalled by her injuries. In the scramble to get off the yacht Meg has sliced her legs nearly to the bone.

To keep off of the wind, Deborah and Brad hang on in the water as long as they can. Putting her face in the water, Deborah sees a torpedo-shaped fish, then another, and another. It dawns on her: they are surrounded by hundreds of sharks. Now they must all take their chance in the freezing winds above the water.
