The Buncles and the Sages

Watch this episode now on 4oD Buncles and Sages

David and Michele Buncle are a traditional family living in rural Devon with their six children and 50 pets! It's a simple back-to-basics life. While Michele is in charge of running the house and keeping on top of the mountain of laundry, David spends his days running a falconry business.

It's not a high-earning job, but it's one that Michele supports fully by helping David cut up the chicks that feed the birds.

Louise and Mark Sage are a modern young couple who like the good things in life. Louise's work as glamour model "Taylor Ray Lewis" often takes her to the bright lights of London for work, and she works hard to fit this glamorous lifestyle around her family and career as a property developer.

How does a mum who puts her children first cope working away from the family as a glamour model? Can a glamour model cope with the country life and cutting up dead chicks to feed the birds as part of the family falconry business? And can housewife Michele learn to spend more time for herself?

  1. I just thought, even though the glamour model was a bit materialistic she at least 'walked her talk' I thought the Buncles were hypocritical and selfish. If neither had a job outside the home ostensibly because they were so into spending time with their kids, then why did they send their children to school, where they would be learning about materialism and conformity etc, things the parents claim to disagree with. And how Earth Mothery is someone who leaves an infant young enough to still be breastfeeding, and young enough to need their mother, with a complete stranger? It made me laugh actually, them going on about natural living yet buying bread - regardless that it was organic - from a supermarket, since the way food comes from all around the globe, and the way it is traded etc makes supermarkets the least 'green' way to shop. Why wasnt the family making their own bread, which is a great way to teach kids about a more self sufficient lifestyle than driving to the supermarket while preaching anti-consumerism to them. As they sent their kids to school surely one of them at least could work outside the home and bring in some money so the family could have a better -not necessarily more materialistic either - standard of living. Brining a wage in would enable them perhaps to take their kids out with their mates,or go on a camping holiday or something. I also thought for someone who claimed to believe in a more natural approach, Ms Buncle had an odd opinion of kids seeing their mother naked. The photos on the wall were not pornographic so what exactly was she complaining about? The other mum is right not to hide what she does from her kids. It is nothing to be ashamed of to be a glamour model. As an earth mother type I do not exactly agree with women eposing their breasts to titillate men,but at least the photos were tastefully shot and their were no genitalia shots...in fact most of the photos were of her wearing actually more than someone would wear Making an issue out of nudity draws more attention to it and that is the thing which gives kids the message that nudity is something rude or dirty. Speaking of dirty, yes, the Buncle's house was dirty, and living a more natural way of life is no excuse. It all made me wonder why the Buncles agreed to take part in the first place. They were posturing fops, while the model at least had an actual life.
