Wife Swap

The Murphys and the Moystons

Watch this episode now on 4oD The Murphys and the Moystons

A driven perfectionist swaps her life with a woman who adores life in the slow lane.

Hairdresser Kerry Murphy lives at 110 mph and demands perfection in every aspect of her life: her five-bed Rotherham home, her work and her appearance. Married to building contractor Tim she believes you can achieve anything - if you work for it. All day, every day is jam packed for Kerry as she juggles her home life with her job. Her aim is to bring glitter and sunshine into people's lives.

On the other hand, Kelly Moyston is a self-confessed lazy mum. Wedded to her pillow, she and 18-month-old Georgina are rarely up before lunchtime and fiancé Steve is expected to do all the chores and the cooking, after his 12-hour shifts on the buses in Bristol. Kelly will happily chat with her friends online for up to 12 hours a day, and she transforms herself into a karaoke queen four nights each week, too. Meanwhile, Steve is left holding the baby.

In this dramatic exchange, Kerry gets a crash course in parenting, while Kelly is soon struggling to cope with life as superwoman. But will the Wife Swap experience provoke any life-changing experiences for either of them?

  1. I have never posted any comment, but just couldn't resist myself in this case. I just want to say to Kerry that she is an AMAZING woman and any foster child is going to be extremely happy to be welcomed to your family. Kerry - you are a true inspiration. Your hard work, patience and smile can change the world around you and make a better place to live. I truly admire you and I hope all of your dreams will come true!!! As for kelly, i cannot imagine how can anyone be so selfish and self-centered! she easily admits to having no ambitions or prospects... While every parent wants best for their family... Shocking....

  2. What an inspiration Kerry is. Most people who cry when they see their new house on this programme cry for themselves but she cried because she had been given the opportunity to "bring some sparkle" into someone's life. She threw herself into caring for that child, changed the child's diet but stuck to the unhealthy eating regime herself. She could easily have said she didn't want children and left it there but has decided to use her gift for mothering as a foster parent. Hope more people follow her example. What a fantastic role model.

  3. I think rather than slagging and writting the girl off as lazy and an unfit mother we should reach out and help her. I think the poor girl is suffering from a severe case of poor self esteem and possibly is depressed. She isn't a monster she is just a fairly common exanple of a woman trying to adjust to motherhood. I for one wish her the best of luck for the future and believe that she can and is changing.

  4. This is Kerry and Tim from the episode of wifeswap 21st june. We understand how you all feel as we did ourselves after filming this. But we knew that to go ahead was definately the right thing as we knew it would bring attention to the situaton. We are in contact with them and things have and still are changeing for the better. Both Kelly and Steve are lovely people and want to do bettter for their children. We truely believe that Kelly did not realise what she was doing was neglect. Georgina, as you saw was a very happy girl, but I do realise things could not go on as they were. We will be visiting the Moystens soon to see how they are all doing. Kerry and Tim

  5. I would just like to say i saw the programme last night and what a wonderfull women Kerry was. She was so sweet and loving with Georgina. I was nearly crying my self when she had her in the sink. And Kelly does not deserve that child!! Well done Kerry!

  6. I was absoluntly appalled by what i witnessed on this episode i actually thought it could have been a set up it was that bad. And i hope that the authorities will be watching over baby Georgina as i don't believe that someone like Kelly can change over the period of a television programme. It really saddened me to see that poor baby and also then to find out there will be another addition just increased the worry that i have. I appreciate that there are people with different parenting skills all over the world but for Kelly to willingly show her incompetence and lazyness on national TV she obviously thinks that it is ok. I truly cannot express how angry the show made me.

  7. I'm the commissioning editor at Channel 4 for Wife Swap, and I wanted to post here to give some background to last Sunday's episode. I'm grateful to the people who have commented on this programme for taking time to voice their concerns and want to reassure everyone first of all that both Kelly and Georgina are very well, and that we have been in regular touch with Kelly both before and since the programme aired. I would like to assure you that Channel 4 takes its obligations and responsibilities seriously with regard to contributors to programmes, both adults and children. We select all our contributors very carefully, and obtain advice from a range of people, including psychologists and other expert professionals about the suitability of people to take part in the series. During the filming there is always a member of the crew present, and although the programme is filmed in the style of an observational documentary, we are always conscious of our ongoing responsibilities towards the contributors, which would include the crew stepping in if they felt that the situation warranted it. Clearly in the film we see Kelly go on a journey - she begins the swap by describing herself as a 'lazy mum', but during the course of the episode we see her change her ways. As a result of appearing in the programme she made changes in how she brings up baby Georgina - who now gets up no later than 9.30am, has a healthier diet and regularly goes to the children's play centre featured in the film. And of course Kerry Murphy on the other side of the swap also made changes in her household as a result of experience in the programme. This is all shown at the end of the programme, giving what I think is ultimately a very positive outcome. Alistair Pegg Editor, Factual Entertainment, Channel 4

  8. Re Wife Swap The Murphys and the Moystons My husband and I watched the programme last night in horror and disgust at Kelly Moystons behaviour. As parents of an 18 month old child ourselves we were appalled at her, what can only be described as, neglect of her beautiful little girl. To be blessed with a child is both a gift and privilege. Kelly Moyston needs to seriously sort herself out.

  9. It is tuesday today and after watching sundays episode of wife swap 2 days ago i still cant stop thinking about that little girl. Kelly does not deserve to be a mum, i was discussted at the state of that flat. How can anyone treat a child like that? She makes me so mad i have a 2 year old and an 18 month old and never would i think of leaving my babies in Nappies as wet as that! That flat was discussting! And kelly should be ashamed of herself as should her husband for allowing this situation to get to that level. That poor child i hope something is done about this. So sad that this still happens! IT MAKES ME SO MAD!!

  10. Good on Kerry what a lovely women, she repeatly said she did have the 'motherly touch' but sge clearly did!!! Kelly is selfish and a lazy young minded person, its strange how not many ppl how touched upon the fact that really Steve as the babys dad SHOULD of stepped in long time before Kerry did. Kerry was a wonderful example that Kelly should learn from!

  14. common people give her a break, you dont know this girls background only what has been potrayed, im sure she thought about her daughter and husband everyday and mentioned it but it was proberly highly edited. for all we know she could be suffering from depression and using going out 4 nights a week to relieve it. i suffered from it for years with children and it wasnt and isnt easy. yes it was a form of neglect but i pretty sure she would have learnt her lesson and got her life back on track realising what was happening. good luck to kelly steve georgina and the expectant baby

  16. I blame the parents and so on and so on. Feel sad for george and kelly, it's very sad for both of them, kelly knows no better, she needs somebody to give her a push in the right direction. She thinks Steve is a great help to her but he's no help at all, thirty nine years old!he should be setting an example.GOD HELP THEM!

  17. I am absolutely horrofied at the way Kelly Moyston lives - she is selfish and lazy and should be putting her child before her own lazy needs. As a mother of 1, I Cant believe someone would put their own child through that - it is heartbreaking. I really hope social services intervene's with this - i think i will actually be contacting bristol social services myself. I cant believe a child that young is just left in her cot in wet and dirty nappy's with an empty bottle, it is like something you would see on the nspcc advert. I was in tears watching that show last night - that woman should never be allowed to have children and i cant believe she is pregnant with another!! Can I just say also that Kerry was absolutely fantastic, a total natural and any child will be so lucky to be fostered by her - good on her for deciding to do that, there should be more people like her.

  18. Whilst watching wife swap last night I was moved to tears by the way that beautiful little girl was living. That is not a life for anyone, being left in your cot till lunchtime and being fed crisps for breakfast!!!Its really very shocking to see that a woman who treats her child that way is brazen enough to go on television and allow us all to see her appalling parenting skills.I have two little girls of my own and I can not believe what I saw last night.I feel that Channel 4 now have a moral duty to ensure the welfare of Georgina via the appropriate authorities. She is not laid back, she is lazy. She does not deserve to be a mother to that little girl, being a parent is hard at the best of times and being a parent to two is very hard.I dread to think how Georgina will be treated when she has another baby.I hope after the show aired last night that something will change for Georgina and that her life will be better. Its madness that channel 4 think the obvious neglect of a baby is entertainment.I have never commented on a show before but this is just so awful it must be recognised as neglect before she suffers any more.

  20. Absolutely disgusted at that appalling lazy excuse for a mother. She doesnt deserve that gorgeous child. I dont believe she has 'changed' at the end of the programme. I really hope social services monitor the situation especially with the news that she's pregnant again. She makes me sick. This shouldnt have been aired - channel 4 should just have reported her to the authorities. I take no pleasure in watching child neglect.

  22. I have just complained to Channel four about this episdoe. as some-one who works in child care social services I was appalled that it was shown and that the family (presumably) was not referred to social services. The level of neglect described was fairly high and the thought that the film crew was happy to standby and watch a very young child remain in her wet nappy and cot is very disturbing. That itself is neglect.

  23. That is the first episode of Wife Swap that has bought tears to my eyes. At times I questioned whether I should be watching what appears to be a case of child neglet. I applaud Kerry for taking on that beautiful little girl and treating her as her own for a week and cried with her when she was clearly worried about giving the child back to it's own (hideous) mother at the end of the swap. I really hope Kelly has changed as much as she declared at the end of the program, for the sake of that poor little girl and her unborn baby. Although I felt really sad during this episode, it was great at the end when kerry and her husband said they are going to adopt as this women is a natural mother and has so much to offer a child. Good for her.

  24. My son is the same age as Georgina. I am disgusted at the lack of attention that beautiful little girl recieves. For a child of such a young age to be left in her shambolic of a room for many hours is appauling. What her mother feeds her everyday is horrendous. The state of the house is terrible, she walks around that house and could catch any kind of bug through the lack of sheer cleanliness. Neglect is very much the case in this situation, and for her to be bringing an other innocent child into this world is obserde. Georgina is such a bubbly, beautiful little girl that does not deserve to be treated the way her "Mother" treats her. Channel 4 must act, im sure all the mums out there will be suggesting the same. Appauling episode. My love to Georgina x

  25. Am utterly disgusted at the treatment of this poor baby. No child should be left in a dirty nappy until lunchtime whilst the mother, a self confessed lazy lady, sleeps. To openly admit on national tv that you feed your baby crisps for breakfast and dinner shows how clueless this woman is! How can an 18mth old baby be in bed that long and then sit in a smoke infested room whilst the mother surfs the internet? I have reported this to the official complaints department and suggest the rest of you do to. Social services need to be informed before this child becomes another tragedy of circumstance. Am shocked this programme was even aired.

  27. I am absolutely appauled by the neglect shown to poor Georgina on tonights episode. I was in tears watching, I hope that social services are involved with this family in the future and fear for the future of that lovely girl and her sibling to be. I wish the other woman (Kerry?) all the very best with her plans to foster; she was amazing to be able to do so much for Georgina with no baby experience herself; she has a natural gift and so much love to give - she bought a light to Georgina's life and it must have been so painful to leave her.

  28. I am completely disgusted with what I have just seen. As a mother myself, I was quite upset to see how that baby was being brought up and feel it was verging on child neglect. I really hope Kelly has learnt some big lessons from this programme and changed her lifestyle dramatically, for the sake of her daughter at least. How ironic that the other wife is not a mother but took to it brilliantly and showed far more mothering skills than Kelly.

  29. I would just like to comment on the show aired Sun 21stJun. I was shocked after watching tonights show and the life of family Kelly Moyston, Steve and Georgina. My partner and I found it particularly upsetting, to the extent where I feel social services should intervene on a case like little Georgina. Although mum Kelly clearly loves her daughter, it is closer to neglect. That child I feel is at risk with all the general uncleanliness and dirt, not to mean a shocking diet for one so young. I only hope mum Kelly learns from this show and makes positive changes, but somehow I doubt it. Very upsetting.
