Who Downed Douglas Bader?

Douglas Bader holds a special place in Britain's wartime history. Despite losing both legs in a flying accident he returned to the air to fight in the Battle of Britain and became the RAF's fifth highest ace. His life story is well known, but the details of the famous accident that ended his war are hotly contested.

Bader always maintained that he collided with a German Messerschmitt and then bailed out of his Spitfire moments before it crashed into a field. But some experts believe that Bader's account was not accurate, and that he chose a story that would reflect better on him rather than the real sequence of events.

Now a team of aviation historians and crash investigators set out to discover the truth by pulling together all the British and German records of the events of 9th August 1941 and searching for the remains of Bader's Spitfire. In their comprehensive investigation of Bader's last mission the team make a spectacular find in a French farmer's potato field - and come to a conclusion about Bader's last flight.
