On 12th June 2009, Malawi's Supreme Court of Appeal overturned an earlier ruling and granted Madonna's adoption of Mercy James. Ahead of the verdict presenter and journalist Jacques Peretti travelled through Malawi to find out why Madonna's bid to adopt Mercy has polarised opinion both in Malawi and around the world.

Madonna's lawyers were successful in their appeal when Malawi's Supreme Court upheld her application for adoption. This documentary looks at the future for Mercy as she prepares to move to New York with the pop star and asks what's best for Mercy. Should she have stayed in her orphanage in Malawi?

Prior to the latest ruling Peretti spoke exclusively to Mercy's father, James Kambewa, as well as her grandmother Lucy, who originally opposed the adoption, and her uncles, who signed the legal papers supporting it.

Peretti seeks to understand the complexities of this moral minefield and also speaks to the Executive Director of Madonna's charity Raising Malawi, which is based on Madonna's commitment to Kabbalah, and visits the orphanage where Mercy was placed.

Peretti follows events across Malawi as they developed, as one child's life hovered between privilege and poverty.

  1. I think it was a great documentary highlighting the real problem of what these so called 'aid organisations' are doing in poor countries, and using the fame of people like Madonna to get their business done. I know that people in Malawi are very possesive of their land and feel it is the land of their ancestors. They are simple minded people and strongly believe in living and dying in the land of their ancestors, and seems unfair that their land was taken away from them to build a so called school for Raising Malawi. It was very true about your comment on what kind of life Madonna has to offer for these children and whether it is necessarily a better one. It doesnt seem like a better one...to me it seems more like fashion statement. I am not keen on the thought of secretive organisations like the whole Kabbalah cult infiltrating Malawi. Organisations like these need to be stopped. They are such innocent peace loving people and simple minded people andI hope it stays that way. We need to give them aid to help them sustain themselves and give them the support to be who they are...not to change them and their way of thinking!

  3. I am just watching this at the moment and am appalled by the poor skill, tactlessness and incredible preconceptions of the journalist! Comments like 'Maybe they to will convert to Madonnas' loony religion', 'Turn Malawi into Kabala-land' and keep going on about 'colonialism' and the 'strong white man' ALL THE WAY THROUGH... He's stupid analyses of her live-concerts, music-videos and other absolutely ridiculous statements were quite funny, but it felt like the sort of documentary you see on ITV, FIVE or Babestation... If it was supposed to be a comedy-documentary is was a really good show, kind of the Spinal Tap for any serious journalist-student to get giggles from!

  4. Emotionally manipulative (starting on "coffin's street", ignoring that in African countries businesses are usually clustered according to what they do, what if JP had first been driving through a banana's sellers street?), moving into conspiracy theorist (beware of the Kabbalist!) then westerner's guilt trip whilst all the time calling upon the same multitasking and talented "expert", J. Peretti's report is everything but what journalism on the ground should be about. A very disapointing programme that's more tabloid than factual and that dare not questioning other "missionaries" whose involvment in the daily management of the country do not attract as much attention... If one want to look into the problems of Malawi, look elsewhere than in Madonna's adoption of a 4-years old child.
