Wakey Wakey Campers

Series 1 | Episode 1 | Wakey Wakey Campers

Watch this episode now on 4oD Wakey Wakey Campers

Fourteen-year-old Levi is outraged that he has to go to bed before 10pm and sing Twinkle Twinkle Little star with his fellow youngsters before heading off to his chalet. And nobody seems happy with their new 1960s wardrobe.

Most disillusioned by far, however, seem to be the young, single 18-year-old lads who tend to spend their holidays living it up on the island of Kavos. Unused to a holiday with families, old people, restrictions, curfews and "the voices of authority" telling them how much they can and cannot drink, the lads end up in serious trouble with the Major and the pink coats before day three has even dawned.

But it certainly is fun for all and all for fun, as far as 87-year-old Janet Boggis is concerned. Not willing to be outdone by the younger members of her team during the camp's Olympics, Janet dons the required frogs flippers and additional attire to waddle her team to victory and win herself a cup in the process.

  1. A few errors here, some of them down to PC and broadcasters' guidelines on smoking! At 55 years of age, I speak from experience (Butlins and Pontins, 1959-64). 1. There were no black or Asian campers. Sadly, they would not have felt comfortable in a white working-class holiday camp. And a 'coloured' pinkcoat (Butlins redcoat / Pontins bluecoat)? Ridiculous! 2. Nearly all adults would have been smoking constantly. Ash trays in the plastic pub would have been overflowing. Smokers' chalets stank. 3. Young males DID go to camps together, and DID occasionally get drunk and violent. And there WAS illicit, premarital sex, or so I am assured by ex-campers a few years my senior. 4. Sorry, series researcher, but the barman WOULD have had cherries! They were required for a port-and-lemon, a Cherry B, and a Babycham! 5. There are not enough participants to portray just how CROWDED the swimming pool, dining room and pub would have been. Chock-a-block! 6. The overbearing major is a ridiculous anachronism. He's from the camps of the late Forties and early Fifties, not the Sixties. In the decade of mods and rockers, he would have got a smack in the mouth! 7. The DA (duck's arse) haircut they gave the boy is from the mid- and late Fifties, not the Sixties. 8. The pub is serving modern beer, including quality bottled beers! No way! A Sixties pub, whether on camp or in the High Street, did not have such a range, and did not have such quality. Appalling concoctions like Double Diamond and Watney's Red Barrel posed as beers in those days!
