In November 2008, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) launched a website called Condition: Critical to highlight the ongoing crisis in the eastern DR Congo.
Condition: Critical tells the personal stories of people struggling to survive in a region that has become the frontline of a conflict raging for years, and which sharply intensified at the end of August 2008.

In October 2008, Caritas launched a US$1.5 million appeal to help 90,000 people uprooted by violence in North and South Kivu, eastern Congo.
