Series 1 Episode 4
First Broadcast: 12.40AM Sun 31 January 2010

In the final programme of the series Pete gets personal, explaining that his first job on the railways was imposed on him by a magistrate when he was on the verge of slipping into a life of petty theft.

Now he says the railways can save Britain from pollution and congestion, if we let them.

Pete examines the dramatic impact the notorious Beeching plan had upon the map of Britain's railways, and whether the changes made were necessary.

He looks at the problems caused by the end of steam service and the huge changeover to diesel and electric services.

He examines the success of British Rail's Intercity network, and explains how the ill-fated APT proved vital to the success of future train design.

The series closes with a look at the effect of privatisation, and at what the future holds with new trains such as the Eurostar and Pendolino.

Pete finds out how much driver training techniques have changed since he began his career on the railways.

And the programme follows Pete's railway career from working as a fireman on a steam train in the year when BR was formed, to owning his own train refurbishment company and fleet of locomotives.
