Series 15 | Episode 8 | Blitzkrieg on Shooters Hill, London

Watch this episode now on 4oD Series 15

Tony Robinson and the team unearth the hidden archaeology of the biggest British battle that never was: the defence against a Nazi invasion in 1940.

Shooters Hill, in south London, was a key strong point in what was known as 'Stop Line Central' ¿ one of several defensive anti-tank lines around the capital, designed to fight off a potential German attack.

The road through Shooters Hill runs straight from the Kent coast and down into the heart of London. If the defences here had been breached, the Home Guard would have been pushed back to the banks of the Thames, before making a last ditch stand in the streets of Whitehall.

  2. I lived in the Shooter's Hill area all my childhood and was evacuated from Plumstead to South Devon. My father was with the RAF, stationed on Eaglesfield. He suffered a back injury whilst mending a barrage balloon. We were at home during the blitz. I saw part of the TV programme and would like to obtain a copy and any further information for my family. Many thanks. Mavis L Carrington P S I am researching my family through Ancestry.

  3. I was very interested in this programme because I used to live in Shrewsbury Lane, Shoters Hill and the house I lived in had an even more elaborate air raid shelter/bunker. Our garden also had a private exit road into the next street with a large turntable at the bottom of the garden which allowed a heavy car to be turned so that it could exit into this private exit road. The shelter was oak pannelled and had two bunks/desks and electricty. It had two entrances and was completely covered in grass. It was made of thick concrete with walls in front of the two entrances. The house was requisitioned during the war. It seems to fit all of the requirements for it to be part of the resistance programme in place for Shooters Hill. I would be happy to supply further information about it. Yours Jill Dedman
