Mull - Behind the Scenes

The Mull landscape

Wednesday 21 April 2010

Filming on Mull was one of the most complex shoots of the series. Transporting a team of 40 people to the remote Hebridean Island was a monumental challenge which took weeks of planning. Team members arrived by air and sea before descending on the otherwise peaceful town of Tobermory - our home for the next five days. To accommodate everyone we needed B&Bs, hotels and holiday homes.

The challenges didn't stop with simply making it to Mull. Getting to site required a 20 minute trek up steep slopes and through forest. Fortunately the local land owner was kind enough to provide a tracked vehicle to carry the heavy camera equipment to the clearing.

The yomp to site was not made any easier by the rain that set in on Day 2. This didn't seem to trouble the local school children who visited as they bounded up the hill leaving the production team lagging behind.

Lunch on Time Team is usually quite a simple affair to organise, the catering team working on site and everyone eating in a big marquee. On Mull we had to hike back down from the chapel, then wait for one of the Landrovers to ferry us to the local theatre where lunch was served.

With stunning views and brilliant archaeology this will certainly go down as one of the most memorable shoots of the year.

Just don't start us on the midges...
