The World's Oldest Mums

The World's Oldest Mums

Rajo Devi, 70, the world's oldest first-time mother

The world's oldest first-time mother, a British woman trying for a baby in her seventies, a 69-year-old Spanish mum and a 70-year-old Californian mother of twins.

Despite a combined age of more than 280, they've all chosen to have babies long after the menopause has put a stop to them doing it the old-fashioned way.

In reaction to the provocative story of Elizabeth Adeney - a 66-year-old divorcee who sought fertility treatment from the Ukraine - Amanda Blue travels the world to meet these four women who have chosen to make the most of fertility technology's rapid progress.

  1. One of the most basic of all human drives is the urge to reproduce and carry oneself forward into the next generation. All the cultural and emotional reasons just add to that. Time to stop praising "virile" old men who impregnate young wives while vilifying older women who have the same urge to bring some new part of themselves, some new person into the world. I lost my father when I was 15 and he was 49. My mother's mother, who had my mother when she was 40) was with us until she was 97 and a second broken hip slowed her down. You just never know.

  2. I just wanted to say that people who have been through the menopause cant have kids normally for a reason their bodies are not built to do so. this is natures way to say your body can't stand the strain and there is alot of complications involed. it is also right that these childen born to these mothers will not have has much time spent with their mother. to a mother to leave their kids at a young and vunrable age when it is unessuary, is selfish. but we are only human, we want what we want.

  6. People just love it when women are 'too old' don't they? They can have a right old go at them for that reason alone.

  7. I think we've got to think about the child concerned. Imagine the mother being too old to play with her children. Or being in an environment where the mother is more susceptible to more age-related problems e.g. arthritis etc. I have no problem with older mothers, my mother is 42 years older, but I am conscious of the fact that I may have less time with her than I would have a chance of having if she was a bit younger. Let's just say it's scary. It's definitely not inhuman, or anything else the British media is hyping this up to be. It's up to the individual at the end of the day. It's their life.

  8. i have to dissagree with most of your coments. im 26 and have been actively trying for a bay for almost 6 years and will continue to fullfill my dream recardles of what age i might be. unless you are in the situation where you are so desperatly wanning a child that nothing else in the whole world matters then i don't think that you have the right to criticise these women.

  9. Why comment on how bad teenage mothers are? at least they are going to be around to see their children grow up. If your 70 your going to see hardly any of your children's life, and it's most likely that their going to have to spend their childhood lives looking after their mothers and fathers because of how old they are. Do you not think that's selfish? - Also think about their school lives, children can be really cruel and they would most likely get bullied because of the age of their parents.

  10. Why do they seek to get pregnant by a stranger? I think the whole thing seems to be about buying a doll otherwise the mothers would be more cautious.

  11. If these women aren't lucky or able to have it after menopause, then they shouldn't have babies. if they have to go at it the invitro way, why do it.
